Have you ever embarked on a quest so captivating that it kept you on the edge of anticipation, with each moment revealing a new chapter of excitement and challenges? Our recent photographic odyssey to Thattekad beckoned us with promises of capturing rare avian gems, and what unfolded was a tapestry of beauty and surprise.

The Journey Begins

Our alarms blared at 3 AM, signaling the start of an epic journey from Bangalore to Thattekad. Negotiating the twists and turns between Erode and Coimbatore, we reached our destination just in time for lunch. Our guides, Danish and Sanu, had meticulously arranged everything for our three-day stay, setting the stage for our adventure.

That afternoon, after a quick meal, we plunged into the Kothamangalam forest. The forest, dense and echoing with life, was home to elusive species such as the Malabar Trogon and Malabar Barbet. Though the Trogon remained hidden, our cameras captured the elegance of the Malabar Grey Hornbills and the dazzling Rocket-Tailed Drongo.

The Mysteries of Nightfall

As the sun dipped below the horizon, our quest shifted to the mysteries of the night. With Sanu's expertise, we navigated the darkness to capture the secretive Sri Lanka Frogmouth. The night was alive with the calls of Oriental Scops Owls and the haunting presence of Mottled Wood Owls.

Kothamangalam's Secrets

Our second day was dedicated to unraveling the secrets of Kothamangalam's avian inhabitants. While the Malabar Trogon continued to elude us, the day unfolded with captivating encounters. Flycatchers darted through the canopy, their movements a blur of color and grace.

The forest seemed to breathe with life, each rustle a potential discovery. Our cameras worked tirelessly, capturing the essence of the moment, each click a testament to our dedication and patience.

Munnar's Heights and a Final Surprise

On the third day, we embarked on a picturesque drive to Munnar, where the Nilgiri Sholakili awaited. While we managed to photograph the Nilgiri Pipit and the Palani Laughing Thrush, the elusive Sholakili, a bird that had fueled my passion for bird photography, continued to evade us.

As we began our journey back to Bangalore, a sense of disappointment lingered. Yet, fate had a surprise in store. A call from Danish shattered the monotony—he had spotted the Sri Lanka Bay Owl. A swift U-turn later, we found ourselves face-to-face with this elusive creature, capturing the moment we had longed for.

In the end, our Thattekad escapade was about more than just photographs. It was a relentless pursuit of passion, a camaraderie forged in the face of challenges, and the unexpected twists that make every adventure memorable. Special thanks to Danish for turning what seemed like a missed opportunity into a triumphant finale.
