The dhole, or Asiatic wild dog, is one of the most elusive predators I have looked for. It travels in packs, communicates in eerie whistles, and moves through the forest with a restless, flowing energy that is very hard to anticipate.
I have photographed dholes at Bandipur, usually as a pack appearing on a forest track and then melting away just as quickly. Unlike the big cats, they are active by day, and an encounter is less about a single portrait than about trying to keep pace with a group that never quite stops moving.
Dholes have grown increasingly rare, and every sighting feels like a privilege granted rather than an image earned.
