The Eurasian wigeon is a dabbling duck with a whistle for a voice — the drake's clear, rising call is often the first sign of a flock, before you pick out his chestnut head and pale golden crown.
I photographed one at Gajoldoba among the wintering wildfowl. A grazing duck as much as a swimming one, the wigeon often feeds along the water's edge, and an unhurried, low approach is the way to keep it comfortable and in frame.
