Field Notes
The Nilgiri flycatcher is a jewel of the high Western Ghats — a small, steely indigo-blue bird found only in the shola forests of southern India and nowhere else on earth.
I photographed a male at Munnar, in the cool, misty hills where these endemics live. It is a bird of shaded understorey and soft light, and a reminder of how much the Western Ghats still hide in their highest, quietest forests.
