The northern lapwing is a wader with a flourish — a wispy black crest curling up from its head, and a dark plumage that flashes iridescent green and purple when the light catches it right.
I photographed them at Gajoldoba in winter, where these visitors from the north feed across the open, muddy margins. Coaxing the light to reveal that hidden green sheen, rather than a plain dark bird, is the quiet challenge with this species.
